My creative works, inclusive of visual artworks and my poetic works, are inspired by the creative manifestations and processes of nature.
I seek to convey this depth of connection with the earth and life cycles by composing my works in a manner that encourages an intimacy with the subject of the painting, print or poem. Often, I combine--or intermingle--processes, materials and means of aesthetic composition to generate a more encompassing experience of the work. There is often an interflow between those sublime events of my having been immersed in nature--transformed by her--and the art and poetry that such timeless moments inspire.
Primeval Awakening, a mixed-media work on canvas, is one of my newest compositions that reveals how my visual art is in relationship to my poetry. This piece, like much of my writing, communicates my deep reverence for and connection with the natural world.
Often, an experience inspires me to respond both by way of poetic imagery and visual imagery. There is a flow of energy and a feeling tone that is conveyed between the two forms of creative response. While the literary and the visual works each develop and grow towards a self-contained fullness of composition, they are rooted in the same earth.
Coalescence
With fingers, passionately reverent, seeking to query wisdom from the earths' soil, I dig
Fingers deep into her mantle--into her illusory solidity to connect in this manner
Becoming one in these moments with the amalgamated pieces beneath surfaces, realizing
Particles of the light of resonant creation sounding here in this very soil, the flourescence
Of creation felt beneath our nails, the soil of earth experience as seeds sometimes and
As flowers then breaking open to reveal to sensing fingers in time comprehending
Truth that they are touching, that they are each intermingling their sensing forms at one
With their very origins--touching with the elemental and originating substance of all
That moves, and breathes and dies rising forth in cyclical rhythms recurring and falling
To become one again--becoming one with these broken vessels--star shards holding
The light of creation once broken wide and open as an unfathomable expanse held
Cradled within the soil of experience that is my body, this humbled body
Of this soil of this very earth, all of this flowing sand now through my fingers
These fingers touching an infinite portiion of these intermingling grains of light,
The emanting infinitude of these innumerable hosts of stars, now one
With the breaking bones touching these seeking fingers questing to know the source
Of this very light cradled within earth's soil breaking--breaking
These fingers are seeking--are querying wisdom from hard experience; are digging
Deeper into her mantle, reaching into her illusory immateriality, finding there the bones
And flesh and the vital substance wholly mingling--we each--mingle with her
Mingle with her myriad amalgamated pieces, as we each continue digging
Fingers deeper into this soil, reaching
Our fingers deeper into this light
