Inter-relationships

When I began creating the "Book of Eve: Songs of the Spirit, Hymns of the Flesh", I realized a new manner of creative process was taking place. Ultimately, this original work--an illuminated manuscript of a volume of poetry, drawings, prints and hand-scribed and illuminated pages that comprise "The Book of Eve"--opened up new dimension in my approach to creating a body of work.

"The Book of Eve" is an illuminated, book of original paintings, drawings and prints that combine with the hand-scribed and painted pages of poetry. The poetry was transcribed in a manner that integrated the text as a visual component of the pages.

While I enclosed the pages within a cover, I intentionally kept the book unbound and unpaginated. I also varied the orientation of the "folios" in the book to encourage reader/participant to engage with the work kinetically.

The text and art imagery, along with the physical form of the book and pages become an artform that is experienced within the dimensions of time and space. My intent was to lengthen the time spent interacting with the art and to make it a more personal and body-oriented experience.

While this project was the first instance where I combined my poetry, painting and printmaking into a unified artform, the greater significance of "The Book of Eve" is its relationship with my current body of work.

In my current series of works, "New Views of the Landscape" I combine and layer smaller works (paintings or prints) with large, painted fields or larger paintings on canvases. I compose the works in such a manner that texture, color and dimensional forms combine to emphasize light and the passage of time as a viewer/participant experiences the work(s) in relationship with the body's proximity to the painting.

  1. I just saw your work at 7 East Gallery in Woodstock VA and found a few words to describe it. I advise everyone to see it in person. I felt i was lying on the forest floor, aware of a dappled depth of possibilities with real branches, real stone. The trees/vegetation are archetypal. The works put me in an energized reverie.
