Artist’s Notes on the Series of Works:
Perceiving Earth: New Views of the Landscape

In my current series of works, Perceiving Earth: New Views of the Landscape, I employ the synergistic combination of direct painting, printmaking and collage on canvas. I combine and layer media, imagery, and creative processes to create works that encourage new perceptions of the natural world. Although contemporary in compositional design, these works honor traditional landscape painting, and are themed around our relationship with the natural world. Each of the works in this series references combinations of earth-forms, sky, water and flora.

My working process involves the integration of my original fine art prints and drawings with collage elements of paper and natural materials to form complementary textures. Paint acts as the unifying medium and allows for the transformation of the boundaries between painting, printmaking and sculptural aspects.
By juxtaposing and harmonizing color, texture and visible brushwork, I create multi-dimensional landscape compositions. The artwork in this series is connected with my goal of generating a more dynamic relationship between my art and viewers. The physical presence of each piece occupies the actual space it is viewed in, in such a way as to invite viewers—as experiential participants— into the “figure/ground” relationships that are active in each composition. With this series, I also hope to encourage a more active and responsive relationship with our Earth environment.
